About screw piles
What are screw piles? How do they work?
Screw piles are a versatile, permanent type of foundation that can be installed quickly, with relatively low cost and disturbance. They are constructed from a high strength steel shaft with helices (similar to screw threads) welded on.
Screw piles are wound into the ground much like a screw is wound into wood. They can be installed using various earth moving machines (we use a skid steer) fitted with a rotary hydraulic attachment.
Once installed, screw piles can provide a permanent foundation for all sorts of projects, including decks, sheds, hot tub pads, concrete pads, mobile homes/trailers, and more!
How much do screw piles cost?
Screw piles are an affordable solution to all of your foundation needs. Exact pricing is determined by a number of factors such as the type of soil, what type of structure is being supported, how deep we need to go to reach desired torque, as well as the location of the project and how many piles you need.
Here’s a rough idea of pricing on a typical project:
- 10+ piles+: $195 each
- 4-9 piles: $200 each
- 2-3 piles: $250 each
- 1 pile: $350
How many screw piles do I need?
The number of screw piles needed would depend on the purpose of the project and the specs required for that project within the Alberta Building Code. A 10×10 deck, for example, would require 2 screw piles.
How deep do they need to go?
The depth of the screw pile would go a minimum of 10’. We may have to use an extension to go deeper to reach the desired torque.
How long do screw piles last? Do they require any maintenance?
The lifespan of a screw pile depends on the type of soil where the screw pile is installed and its chemical properties (pH, Humidity, etc.). Under normal use in average soil you can expect about 75 to 100 years or more. They do not require any maintenance.
Can screw piles be removed?
Screw piles can be removed, but once you remove them we do not recommend installing them again in the exact same location because there may be a void in the ground where the screw pile was located which could cause the screw pile to sink in the future.
Can I install screw piles by myself?
Installing screw piles requires specialized equipment and training.
